  • Double spaced, except for block quotations, notes, bibliography entries, table titles, and figure captions.
  • 1 " margin on all sides
  • Font size should be consistent - no less than 10pt, although 12pt is preferred.
    • Times New Roman or Courier
  • Page numbers should begin on the first page of text (i.e. not the title page) using Arabic numerals (i.e. 1, 2, 3... not I, II, III, IV...).
  • 3 Major Sections
    • Title Page
    • Body
    • References
    • (Note: An abstract may be placed between the title page and the body, but is not always required for student papers. For additional information, ask your professor for guidance.)

What's Included on the Title Page of Your Paper

A Title Page is Usually Included in a Chicago/Turbanian Paper and Has the Following Details:

  • The title should be aligned centered a third of the way down the page.
    • For subtitles, end the title line with a colon and place the subtitle on the line below the title.
  • Your name, class information, and the date should follow several lines later.
  • Double-space each line of the title page.

How to Use Headings

Here is a list of formatting conditions to keep in mind if you are using headings in your Chicago/Turbanian paper:

  • Keep headings and subheadings consistent.

  • Apply headline-style capitalization to headings.

  • Begin each subheading on a new line.

  • Differentiate headings and subheadings using font size.

  • Make sure the hierarchy of headings is clear and applied consistently.

  • Distinguish levels of subheadings through type style (bold or italics) and placement (centered or flush left).

  • Limit heading hierarchy to three levels.

  • Do not place periods at the end of subheadings.
