How to Research for Plays and Theatre Resources

Finding Theatre Books, Plays & More

Searching via Library Online Catalog

Click the Online Catalog button on our website.

The Advanced Search will open in a new window and is recommended if you don’t know the exact title of the item for which you are searching. if you want to search for a phrase such as “American drama”, click the drop down menu in the middle and select as a phrase.  You may also wish to select Author in the drop-down menu on the right side for a specific playwright or leave it as Keyword Anywhere.

Browsing in the library

Theatre books and plays are located on the 2nd floor of the library. The primary Library of Congress call number section for theatre and drama books is P. Anthologies of plays and general books on theatre and drama can be found in PN 1530 - PN 3299.

Plays by individual authors will be found within the section correlating to the nationality of the author. Some examples of call numbers by nationality are:

PA Greek & Roman Language and Literatures

PG Slavic, Baltic, Albanian Languages and Literatures

PJ Oriental Languages and Literatures

PK Indo-Iranian Languages and Literatures

PL Languages and Literatures of Eastern Asia, Africa, Oceania

PQ French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese Literature

PR English Literature

PS American Literature

PT German, Dutch, Scandinavian, etc. Literature

The Library also has a small special collection designated as the Kevin Crawford Collection. These books are located on the 2nd floor and primarily contain resources related to drama, theatre, and literature. The books are cataloged using the same Library of Congress call numbers as the general collection but have the prefix Theatre prior to the call number. These books circulate the same as the general collection books.

Checking Out Items

You may check out books for three weeks at a time and media items for one week at a time. There are overdue fines if materials are returned late: books are 5 cents a day per book; $1 a day per media item.  Fines accrue daily to a maximum amount of $10 per item. Renew your items online, over the phone, or in person to avoid overdue fines.
